A world without packaging? Inconceivable!
Nowadays, whether it’s pizza boxes or outer packaging for smartphones, cosmetics, food, or other consumer goods, the packaging is every bit as important as what’s inside it. It surrounds, protects, and holds the product. More than anything, though, packaging ensures that products are presented in the most appealing way possible, setting them apart from the competition so that they sell well!
High-quality packaging made of paper, cardboard, card stock, or plastic is usually printed using the “Flexo pre-print” method. With this method, the cover paper is first printed on a separate printing machine, one roll at a time. These rolls of paper are then used in cardboard industry machinery that turns them into decorative outer covers for packaging and displays - such as cardboard sleeves for coffee to-go cups, stands at supermarkets, or outer packaging for laptops or smart watches.
As digitization advances and cutting-edge technology becomes more widespread, the job of “printer” has come to encompass a much wider range of required skills and responsibilities. This also led to the creation of the “print media technologist” job title, which has been in use since 2011.
Media technologists have a good eye for colour, and they enjoy working with large machinery. Precision skills and enthusiasm for cutting-edge technology are good prerequisites for this multi-faceted job. Print media technologists are able to use a variety of printing methods; depending on the individual job specifications, they employ whichever method will display products most effectively. They set up printing machines, prepare print files, mix colours, and manage and monitor the entire print process.
The three-year technical apprenticeship to become a print media technologist is the first step on your journey to a career with excellent developmental opportunities; in addition to receiving the intensive support of an excellent training team and great colleagues at your apprenticeship location (Northeim or Ilsenburg), you’ll also enjoy all the advantages of the THIMM Group’s trans-locational training strategy.
Visiting other locations and doing hands-on training at cooperating businesses will help you build a broad range of knowledge and experience, creating the perfect foundation for a great start to your career.
"When I discovered the field of print media technology, I didn’t know anything about it, but I got excited about it after working a trial day at Christiansen Print. At the interview, they look at more than just grades - more than anything, they want people who are open to new ideas and have a desire to learn. As large as the company and the machines are, I was surprised to find such a familial atmosphere: everyone is friendly and helpful here, and they support me in every situation. To me, every day here is exciting - not only because I’m always learning new things, but also because I understand the processes and how they’re related a little more each day."
